🌿

Origin & Sourcing

Star Anise (Illicium verum) is sourced directly from trusted farmers in South Kerala and South India. This beautiful star-shaped spice is the fruit of an evergreen tree and is harvested just before ripening, then sun-dried to develop its distinctive licorice-like flavor.

  • Sourced directly from Kerala farmers
  • Harvested at optimal maturity
  • Natural sun-drying process
  • Rich in essential oils (anethole)

Types & Grades

Star Anise is graded based on completeness, size, and oil content:

Whole Stars (8 Points)

Premium grade with complete 8-pointed stars. Highest visual appeal and aroma.

Broken Stars (Spring Grade)

Partially broken stars, still aromatic. Economical option for grinding.

Autumn Grade

Second harvest with slightly smaller stars. Good balance of quality and value.

Seeds Only

Just the seeds extracted from pods. Used for oil extraction and powder.

How to Identify Quality

Shape: Look for complete 8-pointed stars. Broken or incomplete stars indicate rough handling.
Color: Should be reddish-brown to dark brown. Black or very pale indicates age or poor quality.
Aroma: Strong, sweet licorice scent when crushed. Weak aroma means old stock or low oil content.
Seeds: Each point should contain a shiny brown seed. Empty points indicate immature harvest.
